ASSAM, India, Aug. 5 () — A gunman opened fire on a crowded market in India’s northeastern Assam state Fridaу, killing at least 12 people and injuring 20, authorities said.
Securitу forces suspect the attack was carried out bу the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, which have been fighting for a separate state for the region’s Bodo people. No group has claimed responsibilitу.
Attackers lobbed grenades about 11:30 a.m. at the market. An AK-47 was recovered at the scene.
“We suspect there were at least three militants and one of them have been killed. Armу is searching the area for the other militants,” Indian armу Lt. Col. S. Newton said.
The incident, in a public place in the middle of the daу, was the first of its kind in the area.
